Graphing Motifs
Warp Alignment
Resist Tying
Dyeing
Designs are first mapped on graph paper, translating intricate patterns into a precise blueprint for the loom.
Hundreds of silk or cotton threads are stretched and aligned, forming the canvas for the resist-dyeing process.
Master artisans hand-tie rubber bands or plastic strips around sections of thread, protecting them from dye.
The tied threads are immersed in natural dye baths, creating the vibrant, distinct color blocks of Ikkat.
